Frequently Asked Questions
What is your hourly
rate?
Every job is individually inspected so you can be given a fixed
price including materials, labour and any associated fees (eg dump costs etc). Quotes are free,
in writing and fixed.
I found someone through
social media who quotes a fixed low hourly rate for any job. Wouldn't that be OK for simple
jobs like weeding etc?
Beware of back-yarders or children of friends and neighbours who
simply quote a flat hourly rate. Firstly, if they don't have the right equipment or
experience, the job can take much longer, making the cheap hourly rate more expensive by job
finish. Also, it is VITALLY IMPORTANT that anyone who works on your property has adequate
Liability Insurance. Even the simplest of jobs can result in very costly mishaps.
You should also be aware that if you employ a minor (under 18) YOU are liable for their safety.
So if they injure themselves whilst working on your property you could be paying restitution
for many years to come.
Don't risk it!
Do I have to get a
licenced plumber to fix a leaky tap?
Absolutely not! While many people don't feel comfortable
fixing leaky taps themselves, it is a fairly simple job for a competent DIYer. Daniel can do a
full tap service, including quality washers, tap re-seating and spindle clean for much less
than a plumber's average call-out fee.
Do you have a Police
Clearance?
Yes indeed. Daniel's police clearance is current and up-to-date.
Do you do house
painting?
Touch-ups and minor repairs are done to trade standard using
quality name brand materials, however for larger jobs (full rooms and houses) it is recommended
you use a full-time trade qualified painter.
How do I know if I need a
licenced tradesperson or a handyman?
If in doubt - ask Daniel! He will never undertake a job that
legally requires a licenced tradesperson, but he is always happy to advise what work may be
required, so you don't fall victim to over-servicing or unscrupulous pricing
practices.

How much does
watering your lawn really cost?
Most
modern Australian lawns are ‘drought tolerant’. This means that (by necessity) they don’t need
as much water as the typical English lawn (which is where our love for lawns originated from).
A good soaking once every 10 days is enough to keep most Australian lawns healthy and
attractive.
With that in mind, how much does a good soaking cost for an average sized
front lawn?
At full flow, an average garden tap runs at approximately 22 ltrs per minute. (Of course, the flow rates will vary in different areas.)
A standard round dome metal
sprinkler will distribute the water over a 6 – 10 mtr diameter, depending on brand and
type.
For this exercise, let’s go with the smaller diameter coverage, which would water approximately
28 sq mtrs of lawn.
This means, for an average front lawn of 50-60 sq mtrs the sprinkler would need to be moved
once to cover the entire lawn area.
If the sprinkler is set at full throttle and left in each spot for 30 minutes, the total water
used would be 22ltrs x 30 mins x 2 spots = 1,320 ltrs
At the current SA water rate of $2.029 per kilolitre, this equals a total cost of $2-68
for 1 hour of watering the lawn at full throttle.
If we exclude winter and the 2 weeks either side, where watering is not usually required, this
means that if you water your lawn once a week, then you will be watering 37 times a year.
The total annual water cost for a healthy attractive lawn is $99 (which equals $1-90 per week
averaged over the full year).
In Adelaide, most people who use a professional contractor to mow their lawns, have it mowed
every 2-4 weeks.
If we use every 3 weeks as an average, then at $60 per mow (this of course varies based on the
size of the lawn etc) you would spend $1,040 per year on lawn mowing.
So, ask yourself this….
Why spend $1,040 ($20 per week) mowing a lawn that you couldn’t be bothered spending $99
($1-90 per week) on water to keep alive and healthy?
A question to ponder:
Lots of people apply expensive fertilizers to their lawns a couple of times a year and then
diligently water it in. A week or so later and the lawn starts to green up….. because of the
fertilizer or the water…?
